Winter Maintenance Tips

It’s beginning to look a lot like - and feel like - Christmas. Below are some tips that can assist you in keeping your home in excellent condition during the winter months while avoiding costly repairs:

1. Have your chimney professionally inspected and cleaned

2. Ensure that your attic is well-insulated and add more insulation if needed

3. Insulate pipes to prevent freezing

4. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if necessary

5. Have heating systems professionally inspected and maintained

6. Inspect the roof, downspouts, and gutters for damage and debris after storms

7. Check the basement for water leaks during thaws

8. Switch ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to push warm air downward

9. Cover your air-conditioning unit

10. Seal drafts around doors and windows

11. Remove, or cover and secure, patio furniture

12. Change the oil in your snowblower

13. Stock up on salt, ice melt or sand, and shovels

14. Prepare for snowstorms or power outages; stock up on essentials, including non-perishable foods, water, flashlights, batteries, and emergency kits
